What is an occasional table?

Occasional tables are small, decorative tables that can include such tables as end tables, lamp tables and sofa tables. Generally, the occasional table is a piece that is small enough so that its purpose is simply decorative rather than, say, more practical tables such as those used in kitchens or formal dining rooms.

One reason occasional tables are so popular in home decor is that they provide a bit of luxury or beauty in a small space. Occasional tables today are made in a vast array of materials, ranging from exotic shell-covered wood to modern glass and brass or industrial-chic wood and steel. Another reason occasional tables are so popular is that some clients desire small-scale pieces to accompany their apartment-size sofas.

This Charleston Regency-Pineapple Martini Table from Stanley Furniture is an occasional table we spotted at a recent High Point market. The pineapple is of course the symbol of hospitality, and the table features a carved base that is balanced by a Clear Walnut top trimmed in Champagne Silver Leaf. This simple and elegant piece is part of Stanley Furniture's Charleston Regency collection, which they note is "inspired by modernity and enchanted by antiquity."
