Tips on selecting the right wood for kitchen cabinets

While the paint and wallpaper in a kitchen may be changed many times over the years, cabinetry is one choice that consumers tend to live with for a long time, so selecting the right cabinetry is especially important. According to the experts at KraftMaid, it doesn’t have to be an overwhelming process. In fact, choosing the right wood basically means focusing on just three important design details: type, color and grain.

Type — Woods are classified as either hard or soft. Hardwood come from broad-leaf trees including birch, oak, maple, cherry and hickory. Softwood comes from evergreens with needles, trees such as pine, spruce and cedar.

Color — All woods have natural colors and natural variations, ranging from the lighter shades of maple to the darker hues of cherry wood.

Grain — Every tree has distinct grain patterns and markings, so each piece of wood from a particular tree will have a unique design.
