Doris Duke's decorative arts inspire Pindler & Pindler fabric line

One of the more intriguing new decorator fabric collections is the Newport Mansions Doris Duke Collection from Pindler & Pindler, one of the custom fabric lines we carry at Panoply Interior Design. Doris Duke was born in 1912, and her father was a founder of the American Tobacco Company, the Duke Power Company and a benefactor of Duke University. Upon his death, he left his daughter an estate estimated at $80 million. She purchased her Newport, Rhode Island estate, Rough Point, and a tropical getaway in Hawaii, Shangri-La. In these homes, Miss Duke displayed the many treasures she amassed from her world travels, including notable collections of Islamic and Southeast Asian art.

A lifelong preservationist and environmentalist, Doris Duke spent much of her time and her fortune restoring Colonial buildings in Newport, Rhode Island, where she summered. Pindler is among a distinguished group of licensees allowed access to Miss Duke’s fine decorative arts. Inspired by the exquisite art, antiques, furnishings and global findings at Rough Point, Pindler has captured the timeless elegance and eclectic nature of Doris Duke in the Signature Exclusive Doris Duke Newport Collection.

The Florentina fabric above features multipurpose large scale floral embroidery. Florentina was inspired by a circa 1925 yellow silk day dress found in Miss Duke’s wardrobe archives at Rough Point. The floral and leaf vine pattern is embroidered on a linen blend ground.
